Rotiboy buns are the Mexican coffee buns, which I tried for the first time in Jakarta, many years ago. They originally come from Malaysia. ‘Roti’ is bread in Bahasa/Malay, and ‘boy’ is after a naughty boy, who happened to be the founder’s nephew, and “Rotiboy’ rhymes with naughty boy, hence the name. What an amusing history for the brand name.

According to what info I have gathered so far, the coffee buns originated in Malaysia, have nothing to do with Mexico. Rotiboy are the founders of the coffee buns, and now there happens to be many other imitations, such as Papparoti, Roti-O, also many bakeries and cafes, have their own coffee buns.

Coffee buns are the sweet bread buns. The dough is made into balls, which are filled with butter, shaped into a bun with coffee topping spread in spirals and baked to this beautiful coffee flavored buns, with a cookie like crust on top. They are crusty on the outside, and fluffy and buttery on the inside.

These buns are one of the first few things, we got to try when we moved to Indonesia. The apartment where used to live in the start, had a mall under the apartment towers. Rotiboy used to be on the ground level, still is :), whenever, we went for groceries, the aroma of the buns, took us there. Today, when we visited the place, my son insisted on getting them, as it made him all nostalgic.

Coffee buns with different brand names are found in many countries, such as Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Pakistan, Australia, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Korea, U.A.E. e.t.c.
A must try!
